Do you want to discover an age-old craft and learn how to add a luxurious touch to your favourite objects? Curious about mastering this meticulous technique so you can personalize your own creative projects?
In this 3.5-hour workshop, you’ll learn the fundamentals of gold leaf gilding, explore its history, and discover the differences between genuine gold leaf and imitation gold leaf. Using the specialized tools of a professional conservator-restorer, you’ll prepare your surface, apply the adhesive (mixtion), lay the gold leaf, and complete the smoothing and finishing steps that bring out the full brilliance of your piece.
After a few practice exercises to master the techniques, you’ll put your new skills to work by gilding your own 4 × 6-inch wooden picture frame. You’ll also learn how to correct small imperfections and leave with the knowledge and tips you need to recreate this technique at home.
While the wooden frame serves as your practice piece, the techniques you learn can be applied to many other decorative objects.
Led by a professional conservator-restorer, this workshop introduces you to a meticulous traditional craft in a welcoming environment that’s accessible even if you’ve never tried gilding before.
All materials are provided, and no experience is required. You’ll leave with your hand-gilded picture frame and the foundational skills to continue exploring gold leaf gilding on your own.
Please note: Aprons are available on site, but we recommend wearing clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy.
