Would you like to explore the art of jewelry making by learning a creative and versatile technique? Would you love to wear a piece of nature—or a creation that is uniquely your own—immortalized in silver?
Over this course of 4 x 3-hour sessions, guided by a professional jeweler, we will explore the lost-wax casting technique in depth to create a piece of jewelry in sterling silver or brass, as desired. We can also make as you please, whether it’s a ring, a pendant, small earrings, or even a key ring.
We will discover the wide range of possibilities offered by this medium and use them to design your own unique creation. You may also choose to incorporate an organic element from nature, such as a leaf or a small flower. Further details will be provided during the first session.
Throughout the four sessions, you will learn how to:
- – Design a piece of jewelry directly in wax;
- – Use traditional carving and sculpting techniques;
- – Work with wax using a heated wax pencil;
- – Assemble different wax components to create a more complex piece;
- – Add textures and surface details;
- – Work and shape wax using a methanol lamp.
Once your pieces have been cast in sterling silver, we will also explore the main steps involved in finishing a piece of jewelry, including:
- – Removing the casting sprues;
- – Filing and refining the surfaces;
- – Sanding and preparing the piece for polishing;
- – Polishing the finished piece;
- – Optionally oxidizing the silver, depending on the desired finish.
An equal amount of silver (or brass) will be provided to each participant and can be used according to the possibilities discussed at the beginning of the workshop.
At the very end, you will leave with a silver piece of jewelry shaped and finished entirely by your own hands.
No prior experience required. This workshop is open to anyone curious about discovering the art of working with silver.
The workshop includes all materials, tools, silver, and plenty of expert tips.
Please note: The silver casting itself will not take place during the workshop (although the cost is included in the workshop fee). Casting will be carried out between two sessions by a professional caster.
