Is your favorite shirt no longer fitting the way it used to, and you’d love to experience the joy of wearing it again? Want to turn a pair of pants into shorts?
In this 3-hour workshop, you’ll learn how to plan a clothing alteration project and assess its scope. We’ll explore different types of alterations, as well as ways to add or modify design elements.
What we’ll cover:
- – The basic principles of garment alterations, including the “-2 +1” rule and the key areas where a garment should fit properly.
- – Helpful techniques, sources for matching fabrics, and how to develop a work plan.
- – How to thread a sewing machine.
- – Creating a practice sample and demonstrations of double-fold and blind hems.
- – An introduction to darts, garment resizing, and expansion techniques.
- – Evaluating a garment for alteration and practicing the techniques of your choice.
The goal of the workshop is not to alter your clothing during the session, but rather to learn all the steps involved in doing it yourself. However, you are welcome to bring one or more items of clothing to practice making alterations during the workshop.
Required skills: None. Suitable for complete beginners as well as those looking to refine their sewing and alteration techniques.
Optional: You may bring your own sewing machine so you can practice using your usual settings. If you’d like to try on garments during the workshop, please wear a fitted layer underneath (tank top, leggings, etc.), as there are no changing rooms available in the room.
The workshop includes materials, access to a sewing machine, plenty of practical tips, and the goal of helping you achieve clothes that finally fit like a glove!
