Are you intrigued by the world of metal? Careful—we’re not talking about music! Rather, we’re referring to this versatile material that is so present in our daily lives, yet often little understood. Have you ever wondered how the metal objects you use every day are made? Would you like to try making them yourself?
In this introductory course made up of four 3-hour sessions, guided by a metal expert, you’ll discover a range of techniques for getting familiar with metal. It may seem intimidating at first glance, but it’s actually very fun to work with once you get to know it better.
We’ll begin with a theoretical component, covering the basics of the vast world of metal by exploring the different trades associated with it. We’ll also discuss the various techniques used to create metal objects, how to identify different metals, and the effects of heat on them.
Then we’ll move into hands-on practice! Over the course of the four sessions, and with proper guidance, you’ll create three useful objects with customizable designs. The process will include drawing designs on sheet metal, cutting sheet metal and profiles, shaping, welding, drilling, assembling, and finishing.
By the end of the course, you’ll head home with the three objects you made yourself: a spoon, a hook, and a stylish 6 in × 8 in × 12 in spice shelf.
Required skills: none. This is a beginner-friendly, exploratory course designed for curious and adventurous participants.
The workshop includes tools, metal, professional tips—and a few sparks!
Note: Protective clothing will be provided, but we ask that you wear long clothing and closed-toe shoes.
